Brew Day today.....

OB-1 (Standard/Ordinary Bitter)

Original Gravity (OG): 1.040 (°P): 10.0
Final Gravity (FG): 1.010 (°P): 2.6
Alcohol (ABV): 3.93 %
Colour (SRM): 12.0 (EBC): 23.7
Bitterness (IBU): 51.2 (Average)

91% Maris Otter Malt
5% Crystal 60
3% Wheat Malt
1% Chocolate

1.4 g/L Northdown (7.8% Alpha) @ 60 Minutes (Boil)
1.7 g/L East Kent Golding (5.2% Alpha) @ 25 Minutes (Boil)
2.4 g/L East Kent Golding (5.2% Alpha) @ 10 Minutes (Boil)
1.6 g/L Northern Brewer (10% Alpha) @ 0 Minutes (Aroma)
1.1 g/L Styrian Golding (4.4% Alpha) @ 0 Minutes (Aroma)


Single step Infusion at 64°C for 90 Minutes. Boil for 60 Minutes

Fermented at 19°C with Wyeast 1318 - London Ale III

BU/GU of 1.275 looks a bit high...

yes I was just putting this recipe (or as close as I could get) into Beersmith and it came out over - bitter for an ordinary \ standard english bitter (BJCP)...

Fair shout, BUT: 51 IBU in a wort starting at 1.040 that was mashed at 64 C and is gonna be highly fermentable, and could well end up at 1.009 or 1.008, without any significant malty kick, sounds like it will be too bitter. And when I say 'too bitter', this is from the will it be nice to drink guidelines, not a set of competition judging guidelines.

I'm actually drinking something similar which I am enjoying, after a few recent issues, it's probably the best beer I have made for some time. Shit loads of Yankee hops help though....

That sounds very different.... I also did a 1.040 session IPA with loads of centennial, simcoe, calypso etc and had a higher bU than GU, but I wasn't trying to make a bog standard bitter.

My bog standard bitter is the same grain bill as matt but I bitter with challenger and finish with styrian goldings. I only bitter this to around 20-25 ibus I have gone higher but like the balance as is
