Looks like a peltier and a temperature controller. A bit ££ for me but cool idea.

Yeap, I think they actually say it is semiconductor (i.e. Peltier) somewhere on the site. I agree about the price, but could be ripe for a little DIY?

Cheers Steve - that's the best price I've seen a PID go for so I just bought one to use for HLT control :-)

I agree, although size is a big consideration especially if you want to ferment more than one batch at a time. My brew fridge only takes one 23l fermentor at a time. :-(

By the way it is inadvisable to use PID to control fridges. The fast switching causes premature compressor failure. I am just building a cooling system at the moment using a maxi310 and stc-1000 controllers to switch cooling circuits on and off using the recirculation on the maxi connected to a manifold with a solenoid allowing coolant to flow through a copper coil. Each coil will sit in a gorilla tub that also has an aquarium heater switched by the stc-1000. I want to be able to have several fermenters on the go at once because I want to try making lagers as well as ales and also I struggled to find a freezer big enough for my big fermenters. I did consider peltiers but with a cooling coil I can use the gorilla tub water bath that I will use for the aquarium heater too and I can have the maxi in a different part of the cellar so the heat will be carried away rather than being near the fermenters.

True, but you can configure the PID to just act as an on \ off controller (thermostat) and set the hysteresis setting such that it doesn't cycle the power too frequently. This is how i'm running my chest freezer which at the moment is hosting my bottled homebrew but will be used as a fermentation chamber when i pluck up the courage to brew a l*ger..

Can you configure that ebay lizard stat to cool then?

The temp controller to use on fridges is a STC 1000
It has the compressor delay built in to it!!
just seach for STC1000 on ebay they are around a tenner!
