Re: yeast
thanks Mark for the offer but the recipe I have in mind is for a oatmeal stout and it specifically calls for wyeast 1084 I may have problems making this as I tried it a long time ago an ended up with a stuck mash thanks again
Re: yeast
Wyeast 1084 is the dame was White Labs WLP004, which I think you may already have as a slant.

Re: yeast
thanks Ali any suggestions on how not to get a set mash when using oatmeal
Re: yeast
use flaked rather than rolled oats. This will make a big difference.rodneygullick wrote:thanks Ali any suggestions on how not to get a set mash when using oatmeal
And for extra security you could add some oat husks (available from the Malt Miller)

Re: yeast
the recipy i have calls for 510g oatmeal so if i use 510g flaked oats what amount of oat husks would i need to put with it
Re: yeast
It depends what the 510g is a a percentage, but to be honest, you might be alright with just flaked oats.
A pound or so of oat husks would be cheap insurance.

Re: yeast
total grain bill is 5510g that includes the oats
Re: yeast
I have seen suggestions of using voile netting (available very cheaply on ebay) and lining the mash tun with it. If the mash appears to be stuck just raise and lower the netting a bit to disturb the grain enough to get it going again.
You will also have the added advantage that it won't be able to clog your manifold/filter AND you can just pull the netting out and dump the whole grain bill in the bin/composter with the greatest of ease afterwards.
