I have just come across this via twitter

Re: Another national home brew competition
Yeah I saw this on fb this morning. Shame they couldn't get involved in the existing national, but sounds interesting. Not sure how they're judging entries against each other with only 6 broad categories though.
FV #1: Roggenbier
FV #2: -empty-
Conditioning:
Drinking: Dark Saison, American Pale, Legendary Wit, Dunkelweisen, Rye Session Ale, American Brown Ale.

The categories look to the point and quite relevant, a little like the SIBA ones.
Top prize is really good, in fact well worth entering for.

And I did ask them about sponsoring the national back n April....

Re: Another national home brew competition
The beers that fit into the categories are a mess. Tripel and IPa in Pale Ale. Smoked beers in Dark Beer or specialty or even stouts and porters. Saison in specialty.

Re: Another national home brew competition
(Smoked beer is a speciality, it need not be a dark beer.)
It's a comp to find a great new beer not a test of how well you can conform to style like bjcp conformation shows are. I like the categories, much easier to place a beer in and wider appeal to the majority than the rather narrow bjcp categories. Probably suit people with a bit of creative flair rather than the average sheeple who are striving to make a beer just like their favourite one from the supermarket.
Anyway, £5K, fuck. You can't top that.

I think the cateogries aren't quite right either. Mild in the pale catogory - really? And where would you put a brown ale? It's not listed so would that mean you couldn't enter it?
I also wonder how they will actually judge the beers? How much taste preference and subjectivity will come into it?
The first prize is very good but the entrance of £15 is also pretty large and as Taz said this morning, the winner gets to say they are the best homebrewer? Really!

Re: Another national home brew competition
Mild (if it's not a pale one)would go in the "dark beer" category, as would a brown ale. Just because the categories are not so well defined means you have to use a bit of common sense.
I probably won't enter (I can't be arsed posting beers) but, £5K first prize, fuck.

I personally think that they need to be a bit more explicit with the categories if they are also saying...RogerP wrote:Mild (if it's not a pale one)would go in the "dark beer" category, as would a brown ale. "You can enter a beer into any of the 7 categories on the right, however, only one entry per person per category."
Just my opinion though.
