Themometer recomendations?

Post by disasterjustavoided »

As with every product there are many posibilities and rather than trawl all over the net for the next week looking at every review I wondered if you lot could help me choose a decent thermometer. What do you use?

I was fortunate enough to get some mercury in glass thermometers from a closing lab. They have 0.1C graduations and I have a 50 - 70C one for mash and a 10 - 40 for fermentation. For simplicity and reliability I don't think you can beat them. I accept that if they break (especially in your product) it's a major fail.
I like to keep a bottle of stimulant handy in case I see a snake, which I also keep handy.

I like the glass lab ones - inexpensive and simple. But also easy to break if you drop them.

I also have a Hanna effort that is the same as this, and specifically for measuring in liquid environments - http://www.themaltmiller.co.uk/index.ph ... ductId=414 (I paid less than this for it though on ebay)

I'd recommend you don't buy a DigiTech one. I have one and it fluctuates up to 5 degrees either way (with fully charged batteries). Utterly random... complete waste of money.
Taz... or Chris. It's up to you.

Ok, cheers all. I quite like the idea of a glass one too. Will look into it, something good about not having to rely on batteries (insert 1970's joke about "the wife").
