HOWTO: Vacant's Grain Basket

My first few All Grain brews were Brew-in-a-bag. I still use BIAB with my original net curtain when doing a short brew length (23 ltr rather than 39) but recently fettled a grain basket with a stainless mesh filter for my single-pot brews. Together with "no-chill", it makes for a very short brew day!

Here's a picture of the basket in my shiny boiler (Roger's old HLT, cheers!). The mesh base is a £3 Ikea Splatter Screen (two screens came with an old thermopot mash tun from Mark, cheers again!)

I've posted a "howto" on Jim's Beer Kit and thought I may as well make this web page.

That's a great and cheap way to do it, I've considered something similar before, but never quite got around to it.

My idea was to use http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/CONCORD-Large ... _83M1ncmow lined with some sort of SS woven mesh. I never got around to sourcing more mesh as I thought the roll I have for making T90 hop filters might be too fine. Having seen what you've used I might have been wrong.

Good work. I happen to have one of those IKEA screens lying around as I bought one because it looked useful for brewing..
Might have to have a go at something like this.
cheers

The splatter screens weren't new when Mark sold me the mash tun in 2012 and I've been using one as a filter for all my mash tun brews. No rust or holes yet, a quality item.
