I'd heard that you could make a controller from a Raspberry Pi but had no idea how. Looks like some one in holland is making kits and selling them.
I havent looked at it in too much detail but looks like it could be pretty cool and relatively cheap.

True, but surely you could mod it to control herms / rims / hlt as well

Hi I use this and have for 6 months. The rims build not ready yet. But working well total cost was about 80 after adding cables & tube heater etc.

Did you build it yourself? And did you have to buy the Raspberry Pi separate?

I had pi I wasn't using, and I bought a kit as I didn't want do that amount soldering . The guide is very good and mine ran first time.
