Meet Barry

Post by I_used_to_brew »

Barry is an Oak pin, Barry and I are going to share some time together. I like Barry.
He get's full quickly so I won't have to make too much strong beer for him, he might or might not impart some Oak flavor to the beer.
Only problem at the moment is trying to understand his odd Yorkshire dialect.

I am sure you will be very happy together.

Looking forward to seeing what you two get up to together!

Is it me or does Barry look a little peculiar? (Sorry Barry)
The craft beer revolution will not be sanitised!

Ive been inside Barry. I smell Oak.
Barry has only been filled once before so I reckon I will get some Oakiness from him.
He has lots of siblings looking for homes too.

He's a pin. So about 4.5 UK gallons. A nice manageable size. Cost £60 from Masham or you could pick one up from Wadworths in Devizes for £168.

Isn't Barry what Pete Brown's cask is called in Hops an Glory....are they related?

And is there any link to Barry the Sprout of Robert Rankin's Sproutlore?

That Barry came to a sticky end to be replaced by Kevin. Not sure if the Staffordshire Barry and Yorkshire Barry are closely related, might come from different trees....

Barry was rinsed, steam cleaned and filled with water to swell and seal the staves. Quite a bit of water was absorbed. It was then re-steamed and finally sanitised by way of a Sulphur candle. I had also fitted a new wooden keystone.

I brewed a porter the day before falling ill but because I had set barry up on racking and the fermenter had been placed (by chance) in a suitable position I was able to rack the beer and fill the cask up with some help. As I am intending to serve this from the cask I have primed and used isinglass finings. The Shive was knocked in on a brim-full cask to seal it.

As the pressure built there was some very minor seepage but it's held and I'm going to give it at least a few more weeks to mature before I tap it. I have a cask breather/spigot which I will use instead of a spile and keep a blanket of CO2 over the beer.

Now at 5 weeks or so after Barrying the beer and for the last few weeks there has been no seepage.

Whacking in the tap etc may well be an interesting event, but that can wait a few more weeks :)
