Re: Ordinary Bitter - 1
yes I was just putting this recipe (or as close as I could get) into Beersmith and it came out over - bitter for an ordinary \ standard english bitter (BJCP)...Capn Ahab wrote:BU/GU of 1.275 looks a bit high...

I like to keep a bottle of stimulant handy in case I see a snake, which I also keep handy.

Fair shout, BUT: 51 IBU in a wort starting at 1.040 that was mashed at 64 C and is gonna be highly fermentable, and could well end up at 1.009 or 1.008, without any significant malty kick, sounds like it will be too bitter. And when I say 'too bitter', this is from the will it be nice to drink guidelines, not a set of competition judging guidelines.RogerP wrote:Fuck the BJCP and their crazy ideas. Stifles creativity :-)

I'm actually drinking something similar which I am enjoying, after a few recent issues, it's probably the best beer I have made for some time. Shit loads of Yankee hops help though....
Re: Ordinary Bitter - 1
That sounds very different.... I also did a 1.040 session IPA with loads of centennial, simcoe, calypso etc and had a higher bU than GU, but I wasn't trying to make a bog standard bitter.RogerP wrote:Shit loads of Yankee hops help though....

My bog standard bitter is the same grain bill as matt but I bitter with challenger and finish with styrian goldings. I only bitter this to around 20-25 ibus I have gone higher but like the balance as is
