Father/Daughter Brew Session - Janet's Brown Ale

Post by alikocho »

Tonights Father/Daugther Brew Session brings you Janet's Brown Ale. The recipe comes from Brewing Classic Styles and is Mike 'Tasty' McDole's recipe. His late wife, Janet, loved the beer.

I adjusted a little as I had no US malt....

I've done First Wort Hopping a few times, what's the theory behind adding hops to the mash?
When a man is tired of beer, he is tired of life; for there is in beer all that life can afford

It's supposedly like FWH only supposedly results in an even more hop-forward beer. It's the first time I've done it without decoction mashing (my Berliner Weisse had hops added to the decoction and then into the mash, so we'll see.

Hops in the mash sounds fairly daft. You would need two identical brews, one with and one without and then a blind tasting to decide whether there was any benefit.

I suspect it's one of those things that people argue about but that don't actually exist, like hot side aeration.

I spoke to Tasty. He doesn't mash hop anymore, but has moved it up to a first wort addition.

I tasted his version of this - not only was it totally awesome, mine came out very similar to his.
