Wyeast going, going, gone.

Post by Capn Ahab »

Chatting to the guy at LovetoBrew t'other day and he mentioned that whoever imports Wyeast to the UK is going to stop doing so as they are sick of having so much stock that doesn't get sold and goes out of date. There are lots of yeasts supplied by White Labs that apparently are the same as Wyeast, but clearly there are yeasts that would be nigh on impossible to get hold of in the UK if this does happen. Exclusive Wyeast yeasts include:

1010 American Wheat (Widmer vis Zum Uerige)
1026 British Cask Ale (Oranjeboom, then adopted by a British Brewery)
1099 Whitbread Ale (erm, Whitbread)
1318 London Ale III (Boddingtons)
1326 Northwest Ale (?)
1469 West Yorkshire (Tim Taylor)
1768 English Special Bitter (Youngs)
2035 American Lager (August Schell)
2042 Danish Lager (Miller via Carlsberg)
2105 Rocky Mountain Lager (Coors)
2278 Czech Pils (Pilsener Urquell-D)
2565 Kolsch (Weihenstephan 165, Köln (Päffgen?))
3711 French Saison (Brasserie Thiriez)
3725 Biere de Garde (Soy-Erezée, Belgium)
3726 Farmhouse Ale (Blaugies, Belgium)
3763 Roeselare Ale Blend (Rodenbach)
3942 Belgian Wheat (Esen, Belgium (De Dolle))
(info taken from http://www.mrmalty.com/yeast.htm

Other yeasts/bugs not listed there:
3278 Lambic Blend
5112 Brettanomyces Bruxellensis
5335 Lactobacillus
5526 Brettanomyces Lambicus
5733 Pediococcus
1203 PC Burton IPA Blend
1217 PC West Coast IPA
1450 Denny's Favourite 50
3191 PC Berliner Weisse Blend (unlike White Labs also contains Brett)
3643 Forbidden Fruit

Personally I think it would be a shame if some of these became unavailable, French Saison and Tim Taylors spring immediately to mind, so I am considering making slants and keeping a yeast library to preserve them over here. I'd also love to have a bash at making a Flanders Red with the Roselare Blend, but blends are not practical to keep as slants as you cannot guarantee which yeasts or bacteria you have cultured, or their proportions.

Need to get me a pressure cooker now.

Hello mate,

Sounds like a great idea. I have a pressure cooker, and also have access to sterile plastic 30ml screwtop Polyprop sample tubes. I think the glass ones might be better, as i doubt that the plastic ones would survive the pressure cooker.

I always wanted to try 1450 Denny's Favourite 50
60 percent of the time it works every time.

Having seen Ali's yeast library up close, I know that they take a bit of work to maintain, what with re-culturing etc, in relation to how often you might use a yeast, so I would only be looking to stock the best and most interesting looking.
e.g. London III, French Saison, Tim Taylors, Kolsch, Farmhouse Ale, Biere de Garde and the Wyeast bug strains. Probably 10 in all.

I'll be getting in some 3463 (Verboden Vrucht), give me a hollar if you want to add that to the collection.

I've got Timmy Taylor's and 3711 in the fridge at home. You're welcome to some of the slurry once it's done/a scraping out of the packet
