Garages and MOT

Post by alikocho »

I'm very new to the car ownership thing, and I'm aquiring a second from a friend on Sunday. I need to get the MOT and probably some work done before the end of the month. Can anyone recommend a good garage that can do such for me without fleecing me.

It's a Saab 900 if that makes any difference.

Ask Sandy. He's got a Saab.

I know a few places i would avoid and a great place for BMW's. Best bet is always a specialist but not a main stealer as they charge too much!

There is a superb little place on Grove Park Terrace, just off Grove Road in Fishponds. The guy who runs it is called Paul, and he is the most honest and helpful mechanic I have ever met - very reasonable prices too for any work that needs doing.

Alternatively, take it to any of the City Council MOT garages, where they service and MOT council vehicles. It isn't the cheapest test, but they have no interest in repairs, and so there is no chance of being ripped off. You might need to book in earlier rather than later though.

Advice for a Saab - put some money away each month for a rainy day ; )

I know its a bit late (i've been away) but for future reference I would use a saab specialist for serious work and a cheap garage for basic stuff like tyres, exhaust, shocks etc.

Simply Saab in Brislington are really good, not the cheapest at £65 / hour but if you are trying to diagnose a problem and you aren't sure what it is it will probably be cheaper to take it to a specialist in the long run. I have had a few places tell me the problem is fixed (along with a few hundred quid later) only to find I wasn't.
Burns stuff. And makes beer. Usually not at the same time.
