The orders application

Post by Taz Ales »

Beginning to wonder why I started this. At first it seemed like such a simple application to build, but then I started thinking about product catalogues, wishlists, cost and shipping calculators, priorities and so on...

Anyway, not far off now, so very soon I'll need some testers to go through the system and try using it. I might also need somebody to help populate the catalogue catalogue and add members.

It's all fun and games until somebody loses an eye.

I can help you with the product catalogue.

I'll be intrigued to see how it all works. It's quite a complex process.

It is that.

Basically everyone will be able to add items to thier wishlist from the product catalogue. The catalogue items have 3 status settings: available, currently unavailable, and disabled. Members can add wishlist items that aren't disabled.

When an order is to be run, the person handling the order will be able to see how much of each item is in the group's collective wishlist. The handler can then add items to the order with priority on time of adding to wishlist, so say if there's 6 kilos of one item in the collective wishlist, you can make an order for a 5 kilo bale and the last person who added the item to their wishlist will either lose out or get part of thier item.

Members can cancel items while an order is open, but when it's closed (either manually or on a specified date), they won't be able to make changes. Once the order is processed the item prices can be updated and a shipping cost added, so the system will work out what everybody owes.

Maybe I shouldn't have written "Basically".

For some reason your explanation brings to mind Sir Humphrey's description of the Department in the first episode of Yes, Minister. I look forward to being of any assistance I can.

In which Bernard points out "There are two types of chair for two types of minister. One folds up instantly, while the other goes round in circles."
