Beer Stone

Post by nuBroo »

Anyone know of a cleaner to shift this stuff.

Trawling the web seems to come up with a mix of hydrochloric and nitric acid. Now I used to work with sulphuric in my photo processing days so I'm not scared of this stuff but heaven knows where you would get it.

Would have thought there would be something proprietary on the market

PBW made by Five Star (available from BrewUK and the Homebrew Shop) will take it off. Soak warm overnight, scrub if necessary and then rinse.

Interestingly I went up on Five Star's site to discover 'Beer Stone Remover' coming soon.

Sounds just the ticket!!

I just shifted some scrubbing with white vinegar, didn't take too long and seemed to work a treat.
Burns stuff. And makes beer. Usually not at the same time.

Depends what you want to clean it off, as to whether vinegar and scrubbing would be a good idea.

Apparently, though, Orval doesn't taste the same as it once did as they had a new brewery manager who made them remove the beer stone in the late 70s.

Hydorchloric and Nitric mixed makes Aqua Regia (Nitro-hydrochloric acid)....It's pretty nasty stuff and can be used to dissolve gold / platinum. It'd use it with extreme caution or not at all, it's probably a nightmare to dispose of and requires careful neutralisation unless you want it to dissolve your sink.

60 percent of the time it works every time.
