smack packs

hi guys i have a recipe for a beer which calls for a smack pack i have never used one before i put it on you tube they don,t show you everything i have got to where you take the top off can i just put it in the fermentation bin or have i got to make a starter with it?

The wyeast packs have a small sealed plastic sachet in them that contains nutrient. The idea is that you locate the sachet (without opening the packet) and burst it by smacking the packet. Then leave the sealed pack at room temp for a few hours until it swells up - then you know its ready to pitch. If you're making a beer with SG up to 1050 I'd say you don't need to make a starter. If you are making a strong beer or fermenting cold then a starter is recommended.
I like to keep a bottle of stimulant handy in case I see a snake, which I also keep handy.

thanks steve the og is 1050 so i will pitch it in without a starter
