Oxy pahdah

Post by Capn Ahab »

So your standard oxy cleaner/powder is a mix of peracetic acid and sodium percarbonate. After mixing in water and cleaning up the gunk on my fvs, what happens chemically to these compounds? I have heard/read somewhere that oxygen + something else benign is created. Does this mean the waste grey water is safe to use on plants (non-edible)?

i'm not sure that there is any peracetic acid in it. It's basically a peroxide cleaner

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sodium_percarbonate

Dissolved in water, it yields a mixture of hydrogen peroxide (which eventually decomposes to water and oxygen) and sodium carbonate ("soda ash").[1]

2Na2CO3.3H2O2 → 2Na2CO3 + 3H2O2

Peracetic acid decomposes to Hyrdrogen peroxide and acetic acid

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peracetic_acid

Peroxide basically kills just about anything but will naturally degrade to water and oxygen

Cheers phil.

The one I bought from tesco had a small amount of peracetic acid in it.

How long does is take for the peroxide to decompose to the benign stuff on average?

Not sure, I think it's fairly quick. It's mildly acidic so perhaps you could test the pH

How does the Tesco stuff compare price wise to what I normally get off eBay? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/221233276862? ... EBIDX%3AIT £12/kg and it's 100% percarbonate.

Not sure how it weighs up in terms of active ingredients wise but Whizz OxyAction (Sodium per carbonate, unperformed) is available from most pound shops....
