use of yeast

I've got a recipe which calls for 1.5 packets of yeast , suggestions on how to get away with just 1 packet ,I've got a mr malty,s pitch rate calculator don't really understand it, is there anyone who could simplify for me Rodney

What is the OG (starting gravity) of the beer you want to make? And how many litres?

Also on the packet of yeast should be a best before date, can you tell me what it is?

Just make a starter with it. 12 hours before pitching, boil a litre of water, adding 100g DME. Chill to ambient, shake vigorously in a sterile container, pitch the rehydrated dry yeast and leave somewhere warmish. When it is at high krausen (frothy), pitch into your main wort. This will build up the viable cell count and ensure the yeast is in an active state.

In case i'm away from my computer here's step by step what you need to do if you want to make a stater

1. follow this link > http://www.mrmalty.com/calc/calc.html
2. click the preferences tab
3. change the volumes to Litres
4. click the liquid yeast tab
5. select simple starter from the drop down list
6. press the calculate button

This should tell you
- the number of yeast cells that you require to brew your beer
- how much yeast you need with a starter
- how much yeast you need if you are pitching dry yeast


If you are going to make a starter add 100g spray malt to 1L of water and boil for 20mins.

Transfer into a sterile container and allow it to cool to ~20 degrees C.

Pitch your yeast, cover the top of the container with and air lock or sterile tin foil.
Let it ferment until it is finished.

It should give you enough yeast to pitch into your ale.

Double check that the starter does smell bad before pitching. It can be a sign of infection.


If i were you though i would just pitch 1.5 packets. It is slightly wasteful. but it saves the hastle and time of making a starter

Hi Rodney,

What yeast is it?

Wilko's sell Gervin Ale Yeast (Nottingham) for £1.75. It'll probably come around on sale again soon with 20% off. If you can substitute 1/2 pack of that I wouldn't faff around with starters from the sake of 85p. What does 100g DME cost you?
