Racking off pellicle

Post by Capn Ahab »

Had anyone got any experience of racking beer from under a pellicle? I have one that's been in primary for a couple of months and I want to reuse the yeast.

I'm pretty sure it's stopped fermenting and I'm going to rack into corny anyway, but whenever I take a gravity reading I can't help but pick up gacky lumps of yeast mould.

I'm thinking maybe a filter on the siphon hose made from nylon tights. Anyone got a better idea/tips?

What about a racking cane? I got an SS one off Lard pretty cheap, think he does filters for the as well.
60 percent of the time it works every time.

Yes, stainless canes are ace. Sanitise with a blowtorch!
For gravity readings I sometimes use a 100ml syringe. You can get a length of beerline on the end and suck a bit of sample up, enough for a trial jar. Could also use stainless tube for extra cleanliness.

I like to keep a bottle of stimulant handy in case I see a snake, which I also keep handy.
