Holiday snaps

Post by steve crawshaw »

Not boring buildings, beaches or mountains, but beer, and lots of it...
Went to belgium and sampled many wonderful ales in the bars of Ghent, Bruges and Kortrijk, mostly thanks to the good beer guide (Belgium). I highly recommend this book. On the way back I went to a big drinks warehouse called Vanuxeem in Ploegsteert (thanks Tim) and spent too much on a range of beers. So by way of a blatant brag...

The one in the wrapper is a Westvleteren 12 which I bought in Bruges

Also scooped some glasses secondhand in a vintage shop in Kortrijk

SWMBO proved to be adept at nicking beermats from various bars

A full list of the beers bought is here

I think my favourite beer was Duchesse de Bourgogne. An amazingly rich soured and blended brown ale. I would love to make something like this.

cheers

Impressive looking haul!

If you're up for saving the dregs there's a few there it would be interesting to plate out for the yeast.
Maybe the Reinaert and some of the saisons that the yeast can't be picked up from elsewhere.
Would only need the real dregs that get stuck to the bottom.

I found out about this place last week http://www.belgianbeerfactory.com/ and bought two cases. Prices look good ('Belgian' prices apparently though a fair bit more expensive than above) and delivery is only €5.

I think I got a Duchesse de Bourgogne in there, along with Westvleteren 8, 10 & 12.

I also spent too much money !

I loved that beer too. Brought back quite a few bottles of it a couple of months ago. The 750ml 2013 limited edition was even better, but I only got one of those.
