Yeah i made one, it's not great but it's ok for small amounts of darker grain. I usually buy pale or maris ready crushed and then crush whatever else i need.
60 percent of the time it works every time.

How much longer do people think uncrushed grain lasts? Ten years long enough? If crushed grain keeps a "bit" less, then eight years would do for me. I was thinking husks aren't airtight so what's the difference? I can't find any hard facts. If grain is kept cool, dark, dry and safe from infestation it should keep for years.

Which brings me on to freshness in general. I also couldn't find any blind taste tests using grains of different ages, or any chemical analyses of the worts.

Is this all an urban myth?

I've had malt for >2 years that I've used with no ill effect. Keep it cool and dry and I reckon it won't degrade appreciably over a couple of years at least. I imagine darker malts lasts longer as there's less digestible components.

I apologise for the lack of updates, but I've been (thankfully) very busy and it took a while to get the prices, then run some numbers.

I shall hopefully be stocking some crushed malts in the next two weeks, in 1kg bags at £2.40 per bag.

At the moment, I have been offered the following for stock:
Marris Otter
Pale malt
Lagar malt
Caramalt
Pale Crystal malt
Dark Crystal malt
Amber malt
Brown Malt
Chocolate malt
Roasted Barley
Smoked Rauch Malt
Crystal Rye Malt
Torrified Wheat
Flaked Oats
Special B Malt
Acidulated Malt

Some of these are a bit specialist, so I would probably order them in when needed, initially, but the standard MO, pale malts, Caramalts, crystal malts, Chocolate malt and roasted barely would be held as standard stock items. I'll be getting an a selection of whole hops, too, unless people desperately want pellets.

£2.40 per kilo is pretty steep!

Agreed, though £2.40/kg for Special B and Rauchmalt (if it's Weyermann) ain't bad. As for the rest, the convenience of nipping to Brislington when you've accidentally run short on crystal malt will probably outweigh the cost on occasion.

I'll run the numbers again - I need to talk to Rob first though, as some of the numbers seem off. For instance, it's more expensive to buy 3kg bags (per kilo), than it is to buy 1kg bags. Normally it's the other way around.

Out of interest, what do you pay for 1kg of malt including postage? Based on Royal mail's prices, I would have thought it would be at least £3 postage.

If I were to sell at Rob's price, I'd end up losing money on some items.

I'm not out to profiteer on the grain, but I have to cover my costs (including delivery to me), especially as I will have to absorb the 20% increase in price (rather than put my prices up by 20%) in a few months when I become VAT registered.
