I'm sure we will, even though most of us don't brew 50l at a time. I suggest we do it every couple of months or so. We can ring the changes on what we get as well.trunkster wrote:We'll be doing this again before too long I reckon, after all my 2kg of hops is only 10 x 50 litre brews, or less if you hop like an American......

Re: Bulk purchase of hops
I've kinda changed the way I brew - towards session beers, particularly with Summer coming - so 50l batches suit me. Also makes it easier to keep the dozen corny kegs full, hate bottling :)alikocho wrote:I'm sure we will, even though most of us don't brew 50l at a time. Ali,
I am also willing to be flexible on the quantities that I'll take within the hops I am interested in:
Thanks again for organising this.

Fuggles (3-7%) - £9.75 Per Kg
and 1 Kg of
Brambling Cross (5-7%) - £13.15 per Kg
and
Cascade (4-7%) - £6.95 Per Kg

Re: Bulk purchase of hops
From the interest in hops, the plan is to order 5 varieties in five kilo blocks.
I have the following down for hops (please check I have this right)
Roger - 1kg Cascade, 1 kg Nelson Sauvin
Steve Wilcox - 2.5kg EKG, 2.5kg Fuggles, 1kg Cascade, 1kg Bramlin X
Matt - 500g EKG, 500g Fuggles, 500g Cascade, 250g Bramling X
Richard - 1kg Cascade, 1kg Nelson Sauvin
Ali - 500g EKG, 500g Fuggle,500g Cascade, 250g Bramling X, 250g Nelson Sauvin
Taz - 500g EKG, 500g Fuggles, 500g Cascade, 500g Bramling X (you weren't very specific about varieties)
Peter Coombs - 500g EKG, 500g Fuggles
Mark - 500g EKG, 500g Fuggles, 500g Bramling X, 500g Nelson Sauvin
This puts us at 5kg for both EKG and Fuggles, but at 4.5kg on the Cascade, 2.5kg on the Bramling X and 3kg on the Nelson Sauvin. We need to take up the slack on the latter three, or potentially cull them from the order. This would mean that the postage amount per kilo would rise (0-25kg is £10)
Does anyone else want to get in on this, or up their order?

Re: Bulk purchase of hops
Have the hops arrived? The smell of 25kg in one room will be interesting.
Re: Bulk purchase of hops
They've been ordered, but I haven't got them yet. As I can't freeze 25kg of hops at home, I'm trying to have them around for as short a time as possible.

Re: Bulk purchase of hops
I doubt that all of mine will go in the freezer, but will be kept dark and oxygen free.
Re: Bulk purchase of hops
They actually have some info on alpha loss in different storage conditions....

Re: Bulk purchase of hops
We're in for a bit of a suprise I imagine. Brewing with really fresh hops of known AA% we might end up with beers tasting somewhat different to those made with hops with a less well know provenance.
I wouldn't have been planning to brew for a month or so but I am very tempted to whack one out this weekend :)

Re: Bulk purchase of hops
Just had Charles Faram confirm delivery for Thursday.
A few small issues - They sold their last of this years Nelson Sauvin last week. Under pressure, and based on what they had, I replaced it with Citra (the logic here was something fairly unique that will hold up on its own and has a high AA%)
I also forgot to factor VAT into the pricing, so you all owe me a touch more for the hops (most people owe me a between 1.50 and 3 quid). But, the EKG and Fuggles got cheaper! We can sort out the price difference on Thursday night.
I hope none of this is going to be a problem for people.
