I've heard back from Charles Faram about getting hops. We can have 5kg blocks no problem, and postage is 9.95 for anything up to 25kg, so the more we order the more we spread the cost. If we order one 5kg pack it works out as £2 per kilo, if we get 5x5kg packs it's more like 40p per kilo.
Prices vary depending on hop, and run a little higher than I had suggested at the meeting, but are still way below the norm from homebrew suppliers.
Prices per kilo whole hops are as follows (all 2010 crop) when ordering a 5kg package. I've listed what I think would be most popular, but if there's something someone wants I've got their full pricelist. Alpha varies slightly within the normal ranges for the hop:
English
East Kent Goldings (5-7%)- £9.75
Fuggles (3-7%) - £9.75
Brambling X (5-7%) - £13.15
Challenger (6-9%) - £9.40
Northdown (6-10%) - £9.40
Target (8-13%) - £7.20
Progress (4-8%) - £9.55
Boadecia (9-11%) - £8.75
German and Slovenian
Northern Brewer (7-11%) - £7.80
Hallertauer Mittelfruh (3-6%) - £9.30
Perle (5-9%) - £7.90
Spalt (4-8%) - £8.55
Tettnang (2-5%) - 9.75
Styrian Goldings (Bobek) (4-5%) - £7.75
New Zealand
Green Bullet (5-8%) - £9.10
Motueka (5-8%) - £15.99
Nelson Sauvin (10-13%) - £16.69
Riwaka - £17.50
US
Ahtanum (5-8%) - £15.50
Amarillo (7-11%) - £14.86
Cascade (4-7%) - £6.95
Centennial (7-12%) - £8.80
Chinook (11-15%) - £7.95
Citra (9-11%) - £13.85
Columbus (Tomahawk) (13-18%) - £6.01
Simcoe (11-15%) - £15.50
Sorachi Ace (12%) - £14.74
Can people let me know what they might want, including the quantities, so that we can work out what's worth ordering. Either send me a message/email or post below on the forum.
I'm happy to handle ordering and receiving on the hops.

Re: Bulk purchase of hops
I'd be very interested in:
Nelson Sauvin (10-13%) - £16.69/kg would take a kilo or two if there weren't many others interested in it.
I'd also take a chunk of a general purpose English style of hop, probably a kilo.

Re: Bulk purchase of hops
Ali, thanks for offering to do this.
I would be interested 2.5Kg of Each of
East Kent Goldings (5-7%)- £9.75 Per Kg
Fuggles (3-7%) - £9.75 Per Kg
and 1 Kg of
Brambling Cross (5-7%) - £13.15 per Kg
and
Cascade (4-7%) - £6.95 Per Kg
That should keep me brewing for a while!
(My mild is ready for casking at a F.G. of 1.010 so should be ready for the May meeting)

Re: Bulk purchase of hops
Hi Ali,
they've got a good selection.
I would like the following if possible:
500g-1kg Nelson Sauvin (10-13%)
300g Riwaka
500g-1kg Cascade (4-7%) - £6.95
500g Centennial (7-12%) - £8.80
500g Chinook (11-15%) - £7.95
500g Columbus (Tomahawk) (13-18%) - £6.01
i am aware that if the orders don't add up to close to 5kg there is going to be an issue.
Just let us know what the total orders are and we can all try and work something else, I would be willing to up orders if nessasary cause it is so much cheaper.
Cheers for sorting it Ali

Re: Bulk purchase of hops
Yes, just to echo Rich's point, I am quite flexible too when it comes to helping make up the order. I am also a bit of a hop luddite and could probably do with trying some different hops for a change anyway.

People may also need to be prepared to be flexible downwards slightly as well in order to accomodate everybody.
We can have more than 25kg as an order. Cost is 45p per kilo after 25.

Re: Bulk purchase of hops
I'd like a few 1k or 500g blocks, but I'm not fussy about what varieties, so I'm happy to take up the slack on other orders to make up the numbers.
Taz... or Chris. It's up to you.
Re: Bulk purchase of hops
It's looking as though we'll get large enough interest for EKG, Fuggles and Cascade this time around. Other varieties are looking a little patchy.
If we want to be able to have the order to split by the April meeting, then the ordering deadline I want to set is 31st March. As this is also going to be quite sizeable amounts of money it might be helpful if people could get money to me in advance (Paypal might work well here, but I can take cheques too).

Re: Bulk purchase of hops
Hi Ali,
Just a thought, as quite a few of us appear to be quite flexible on the order, is it worth suggesting a 4th variety of hop, that people can opt in to buying. Could be one of the more interesting varieties. Eg nelson sauvign, riwaka etc. If enough oeople opt in then we could get it this month. If not then we just stick to the 3 varieties that we have the volume for.
I for one would be up for chipping on to a 4th variety.
Ps paypal is fine for me.
Thanks
Matt
