You'll only have to buy what's needed for the recipe for whatever brewlength you intend. I'll probably make 80litres and you might only make 20 :)steve crawshaw wrote:OK, happy to go with this but i'd rather not buy another half kilo just for this brew.Bimster wrote:Me too.
Steve C: Thought the point of this was for every element to be the same i.e. hops from the same bale, same grain source etc. to determine the impact our brewing equipment/techniques acheive.

Re: The "Test Brew"
I'm in on this as well and intend to do a commercial batch (100l) of this beer. I wont be able to do it until janurary though as I havn't got my next mega batch of labels yet. When were we thinking of all brewing this?
I shall finalise the receipe shortly but it will be a simple grain bill with SO4 yeast, probably about 5%ish english pale ale but hopped like a US pale ale but with bramling cross if that makes sense. I'll look at it tonight hopefully.
Cheers

Re: The "Test Brew"
Ok fellas here is a recipe suggestion, I've tried to keep it as simple as possible. I have not gone for any dry hopping as some may be unable to do this. There should be plenty of late hop character though: I have gone for a fairly low mash temp as SO4 leaves a fair bit of residual sugar.
Here is the scalable recipe
Bramling X over (English Pale Ale)
Original Gravity (OG): 1.050 (°P): 12.4
Final Gravity (FG): 1.013 (°P): 3.3
Alcohol (ABV): 4.91 %
Colour (SRM): 6.4 (EBC): 12.6
Bitterness (IBU): 43.0 (Tinseth)
93.07% Maris Otter Malt
4.95% Caramalt
1.98% Wheat Malt
0.9 g/L Bramling Cross (7.4% Alpha) @ 90 Minutes (First Wort)
2.2 g/L Bramling Cross (7.4% Alpha) @ 15 Minutes (Boil)
2.6 g/L Bramling Cross (7.4% Alpha) @ 5 Minutes (Boil)
3 g/L Bramling Cross (7.4% Alpha) @ 0 Minutes (Aroma)
0.1 g/L Irish Moss @ 15 Minutes (Boil)
Single step Infusion at 66°C for 60 Minutes. Boil for 90 Minutes
Fermented at 20°C with Safale S-04
and here it is worked out for my homebrew setup with an overall estimated efficiency of about 72% (quite alot of wort loss to hops)

Re: The "Test Brew"
Hi Rich
looks pretty good, and not far off a recipe I made quite recently which went into the NHBC.
Maybe we should agree to brew in January so that it is ready for the March meeting. Does that work?
cheers

I like to keep a bottle of stimulant handy in case I see a snake, which I also keep handy.

Re: The "Test Brew"
So that's 174g hops per 20 litres. Shall we call it £1 per 100g, minimum purchase 200g and that would do a 23 litre brewlength. Can I assume everyone can have or will be able to get the Malts (assume Warminster MO)? SO4 is available everywhere too.
I need to know your brewlenghts....
Rich will need 1000g (£10)
I'll need 800g (£8)
Phil 500g (£5)
Sandy 500g (£5)
Nic 200g (£2)
Tim 400g (£4)
SteveC 200g (£2)
Rob 200g (£2)
James 200g (£2)
Mark 200g (£2)

Re: The "Test Brew"
Well I don't have Warminster MO if that makes a difference nor do I have caramalt so I'd have to place an order which would probably be from Rob.
Although I have now upgraded equipment it would be interesting to brew this as MaxiBIAB (brew length 23L) with an overnight mash as that would be quite different from most.

My brew length will be 37L but could I get 500g? I'm out of BX anyway so could do with some more.
Burns stuff. And makes beer. Usually not at the same time.

Put me down for 200g for this, but if there's spare I'll take another 100g too.
