Re: Introduce yourself...
I also have access to RO water and this has transformed my beers. Hi Hugh, I found the same using RO. For my first RO brews I bought the water and added the appropriate chemicals. Since I got a £35 filter system I simply mix 90% RO and 10% of my very hard tap water to get the desired carbonate leve...

Re: keynsham home brew
Hi Rodney, If you're near Cheddar, visit Ballihoo on the Winchester Farm industrial estate. They have a shop area in their vast warehouse. Winchester Farm is on the A371 Wells Road, about a mile out of town on your side. I'll also suggest you walk over to Helmet City opposite. Weirdly, they also hav...

Re: You know all that chinese crap equipment....but Backer?
£16.99 +£5.95 delivery. I looked at the various ones on eBay, all the same photo, but from the comments people said some of these are only 1.5kW. And yes, the one you sold me has two KM8 lock nuts! Boiler now upgraded to two 2.75kW rather than 2.75 + 2.4 Shel so I have a 2.4 and crappy-looking 2.75 ...

Re: You know all that chinese crap equipment....but Backer?
Pleased to report the replacement element arrived by courier this afternoon i.e. 24 hours. No blobs or copper showing though still a slight roughness in parts. All three Backer elements are 2.75kW but these two new Backer element are a different design from the one I already have. The older one has ...

Re: You know all that chinese crap equipment....but Backer?
I filled in their web contact form on Friday and included a link to those pics in a google shared photo album but got no response. However, I phoned just now and explained the problems - without me asking they're going to send out a new one that's been double-checked and they don't want the old one ...

Re: You know all that chinese crap equipment....but Backer?
The Backer and Shel elements in the HLT you sold me still come up perfect when given a bit of citric acid TLC every few brews, as do the Tesco kettle elements in my plastic boiler.RogerP wrote:Interesting! all my Backer elements are new old stock that I've been lucky to find.

Made in England apparently.
Decided to get a spare element. This Backer element arrived today, I've asked for it to be collected and a replacement sent:

Re: HOWTO: Vacant's Grain Basket
The splatter screens weren't new when Mark sold me the mash tun in 2012 and I've been using one as a filter for all my mash tun brews. No rust or holes yet, a quality item.

HOWTO: Vacant's Grain Basket
My first few All Grain brews were Brew-in-a-bag. I still use BIAB with my original net curtain when doing a short brew length (23 ltr rather than 39) but recently fettled a grain basket with a stainless mesh filter for my single-pot brews. Together with "no-chill", it makes for a very short brew day...
